Population-based cancer registries (CRs) are powerful tools for measuring cancer burden and progress against cancer. To provide valid measures of cancer burden, a population-based CR relies on the recording of each cancer occurring in the respective population [1– 4]. Regardless of the type of collection of cancer data (e.g. pas sive reporting which requires specially designed notification forms to be completed and sent to the CR or active reporting, if information on newly diagnosed and treated cancers is actively collected at source by registry staff), under-ascertainment of cancer cases may occur in any CR.
